It's the Playing Of The Tunes

A record to play over and over is as precious as a favorite photograph; much more than the image or the sounds but something about experiencing a life performance- the interaction, give and take and that it lives right there, and when it's over, it's over.  It's the moment experienced, senses heightened.  It should be received and given in a good place, in our time, together.

Seems, mostly because of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass that these are those times when I am able and willing to dive into waves of music.  Cool blue, and passionate reds.  The full spectrum, the diversity of everything.

The Mavericks and Lucinda Williams at Mountain Winery.  This excellent setting and as the concert began with the Mavericks, an owl flies from the tower up past where we are sitting close to Dexter. It's cool to see Oliver into one of these shows and his familiarity with the Mavericks pulls him in.

Courtesy of Hale, Christian McBride Big Band and Brad Mehldau's Highway Rider (thanks Mike for dinner!) at SF Jazz.  The interplay of both large groups (Mehldau's was about 34 musicians) was attentive, supportive and joyous.  The Collective happens Thursday.

Jenny Lewis, Ben Gibbard, The Watson Twins at the Masonic with Dext, Cai and Bobby (dinner, Thank you Bobby-is there a theme here?) with Megan at the Bell.  Tonight, head above water, under moonlight, and such great comfort.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass: Sunny days, Sunday rainy morning.  We were very happy, knowing that we would miss Emmylou Harris' festival closing set this year  that we were able to catch her early morning sound check.  Sunday morning with Maria is always a highlight.

Happy pizza man. Captures the mood of everyone
always happy that recycling is so well done here

John Doe (DJ Bonebrake, drums too!)

The joy of discovery: Valerie June, Shel, The Cactus Blossoms, Los Cenzontles, Bobby Bare, Wee Willie Walker, The Jones Family Singers, Elizabeth Cook. Watching Tim Flannery end his set on the exact moment the Giants ended their last regular season game to clinch a playoff berth and the former third base coach popped open champagne, sprayed the crowd, and chugged.

Renewal:  John Doe, Rebirth Brass Band, Dry Branch Fire Squad, Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch, The Flatlanders (maybe who we enjoy the most), Allah Lahs, Tim O'Brien, Dave Alvin, Mavis Staples.

So much we missed, and that's okay. Fortunately the stream is still available. Will be catching up asap!
